GOV AMAECHI RAISES ALARM ON SPORTS

AMAECHI RAISES ALARM OVER LEVEL OF CORRUPTION IN SPORTS

Gov. Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers on Monday identified corrupt practices by some Sports Administrators, as the greatest threat to sports development in the country.
Amaechi, who spoke at a Presidential Sports Sector Retreat in Abuja, said for the nation to regain its lost glory in sports, corruption must be addressed by government and all stakeholders.
He particularly frowned at the way and manner the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) was being managed and called for a total overhaul of the body.
The governor attributed the nation’s diminishing fortune in football to poor management on the part of the NFA.

He called on the Federal Government to take radical decision on the football body and damn possible consequences from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA), which might ban the country for two years.

“Mr President should go ahead and dissolve the NFA completely and let FIFA ban us from international football for two years.
“Let us come back home and start afresh. We will perform better later.”
Amaechi said that as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, he knew that state governors were capable of funding sporting activities if there was transparency.
“Most state governors have been avoiding putting much money in sports because of large scale corruption.”

He said it was not right that public funds should be mismanaged as was currently being done by some sports administrators.
“Those who administer public funds should do so judiciously and transparently,” the governor said.

The retreat, which attracted many participants, including state governors, identified immediate practical actions to deliver results for each sporting event in the country.
