Following the successful first edition of the AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards, MultiChoice and AfricaMagic are pleased to announce the call to entry for the second edition.

The AMVCAs were created to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution made by Pan African
filmmakers, actors and technicians in the success of the continent’s film and television industry.
The official announcement of the 2014 AMVCAs was made on Sunday on Africa’s biggest reality show, Big Brother. This after Big Brother invited 2013 AMVCA award winners, Ghanaian actress Jackie Appiah
and director Akin Omotoso, to judge a movie task that was presented by the housemates last Thursday.

This year a total of 28 awards in 26 categories will be awarded ranging from acting and directing to scriptwriting and cinematography, with nine of those categories being voted for by the viewers.
Other areas in which honours will be given are editing, make-up, sound, lighting, including the most anticipated of the whole ceremony, the Industry Merit Award and the Trailblazer of The Year Award.

Last year the two awards were awarded to veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs and Nigerian actress Ivie Okujaiye respectively.

The inaugural AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards ceremony took place in Lagos on 9 March 2013.
Sponsored by Nigeria’s number one low-sugar malt drink, Amstel Malta, the ceremony was broadcast live from Lagos to DStv audiences in
more than 50 countries across the continent.
The event was attended by some of the big name actors and actresses across the continent’s TV and film industry.

Some of the movies that took top honours were : Otelo Burning (Best Movie Overall), Skeem (Best Movie- Comedy) and The Mirror Boy (Best Movie – Drama).

The Best Actor and Best Actress in a Drama accolades went to Nigerian OC Ukeje and Ghanaian Jackie Appiah.

HUSBAND ALLEGEDLY POISONS WIFE FOR BEING BARREN.

The Police in Ondo State have arrested a 47-year-old bricklayer, Damilare Olotu, for allegedly poisoning his wife, Mary, for being
barren.

The 45-year-old Mary who hailed from Kwara State was a trader and had been having running battle with the suspect over her inability to
conceive.
Reports had it that following the condition of the deceased the suspect married a second wife,
Kemi, from Igbara Oke area of the state who bore him two children.

The suspect who is from Akure used to live with the deceased in Ibuji, Ifedore council area of the state.
It was alleged that the second wife reportedly insisted on packing into the suspect’s house but the deceased resisted.
The junior brother to the deceased, Mr. Lawrence Omotosho, told newsmen that the suspect and the
second wife connived to poison his sister.

According to him, the sister had told him that the suspect had threatened to kill her. Omotosho asked the police to investigate the matter
thoroughly and bring the culprit to book.
Also the only child of the deceased from her former marriage, Shola Olatunji who is an undergraduate in Kogi State said the family of her late mother warned her not to re-marry but she refused.
Contacted, the police image maker, Wole Ogodo, said investigation into Mary’s death ws on-going, noting that the case has been transfered from Igbara Oke to the headquarters in Akure for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in mortuary for autopsy.

Patience Jonathan, wife of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has returned home from a
three-day trip to Geneva to mourn her late mother, Charity Oba.

Mrs Jonathan, who returned to Abuja on Wednesday, was in Geneva to receive an award as the Online Child Protection Champion from the
International Telecommunication Union.
She lost her foster mother, fondly called Mama Sisi in an auto crash in Port Harcourt on Monday.
President Goodluck Jonathan was joined by former military Head of State, Retired Gen. Abdulsalami
Abubakar and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP Anthony Anenih, to receive his wife.

The bereaved arrived into the warm embrace of her husband at the Presidential Villa, Abuja at exactly 9.40pm.
Other dignitaries who joined the president to receive his wife were his mother, Eunice, wife of Bayelsa governor, the ministers of transport, aviation, power, science and technology and culture and tourism.
The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, later led the gathering in a prayer session for the repose of the deceased’s soul, while Anenih gave the closing remarks.

As the dignitaries left the Villa, some others, led by governor Peter Obi of Anambra arrived to console Mrs Jonathan.

TOGOLESE ARE GOING TO THE POLLS IN LONG-DELAYED PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS.

Experts say it could expose weaknesses in the grip of the Gnassingbe family. which has ruled the West African country for more than four decades.

Opposition groups have held mass protests over the government's last-minute changes to the
electoral code.
They say constituency boundaries were manipulated to benefit the ruling party.
Angry demonstrations caused the parliamentary vote to be postponed from October 2012.

The polls have been rescheduled twice since then, as mediators struggled to bring government and
opposition into agreement.
President Faure Gnassingbe took power in 2005 following the death of his father, Gnassingbe Eyadema, who ruled Togo for 38 years. He was re-elected in 2010, though there was deadly street violence in the run-up to the poll and complaints
of vote rigging.

Veteran opposition leader Gilchrist Olympio has joined Mr Gnassingbe in a government of national unity and says Togo is now in a "democratic
system".
He is the son of Togo's first President, Sylvanus Olympio, who was assassinated in 1963, four years before Mr Eyadema seized power.
Two opposition blocs, the Rainbow Coalition and the Let's Save Togo Movement, are running against President Gnassingbe's Unir (Unite)
party.

A total of 1,174 candidates are standing in Thursday's elections, with 159 women among them.
Tensions in the run up to the elections have been raised by a number of mysterious fires. The
opposition has accused the government of using the fires as a pretext to arrest its activists.

Togo is among the world's poorest countries. Its last parliamentary elections in 2007 were deemed by international observers to be relatively fair.

The MTN Group has named Michael Ikpoki as the new Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, making him the first Nigerian to lead the country's largest mobile operator.

He replaces Brett Goschen, who took on the role of MTN Group Chief Financial Officer and Executive Financial Director on Monday.
Before his appointment, Ikpoki was the CEO of MTN Ghana.
He was appointed to that position CEO in April 2011 after successfully running MTN Nigeria’s Sales and Distribution channel as its executive
from 2006.

Ikpoki joined MTN in 2001 as a Regulatory advisor after a six-year stint with the Nigerian Communications Commission’s legal division.
A seasoned business executive, Ikpoki is well read, with an academic profile that includes General Management Programme at Harvard
Business School; Sales, from INSEAD Business School; Finance and Analytics, from Lagos Business School and LLB from Rivers State
University of Science and Technology.

Meanwhile, his elevation was among a number of appointments the MTN Group announced.

AIRFORCE INVENTS BOMB DETECTING ROBOT TO FIGHT BOKO HARAM.

Experts in bomb detonation would soon not need to get closer to such dangerous objects to neutralise
them as the Nigerian Airforce has invented a robot to undertake such task from a far distance.

Commandant of the Nigerian Airforce Institute of Technology (NAFIT), Kaduna, John Oshoniyi on
Monday said the institute had developed a bomb detective robot capable of detecting bombs from
afar, and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for surveillance and intelligence gathering in crisis prone parts of the country.

At a news conference in preparation for the 42nd graduation ceremony of the institute, the commandant said the bomb detonating robot,
would assist the security agencies to check the series of bombings by terrorist groups.
The Boko Haram terrorists group has been unleashing waves of violence attacks in the northern part of Nigeria since 2009, and bombs have become its favourite lethal weapon.

On 14 February 2012, a policeman, Sunday Badang, was killed while attempting to detonate a bomb
wrapped inside a bag with bare hands along Ungwar Seriki area of Kaduna metropolis.
As a result of that unfortunate incident, NAFIT went into research that led to the invention of this unmanned robot.
Displaying the before newsmen, Mr Oshoniyi said the equipment woul robot d be presented to the public as soon as it is ready, adding that the UAV, the first in Africa, was a product of the transformation agenda of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in attaining higher
pedestal in military aviation and defence related technology.

JAY Z CHANGES NAME, DROPS HYPHEN...

A source has confirmed that the hyphen has been dropped and that it is now “all capital letters”.

The rapper’s official website says JAY Z instead of Jay-Z, with iTunes and YouTube also using the new spelling.
Billboard editor Joe Levy tweeted: “JAY Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.”
He hasn’t given a reason for the change and there’s been no official comment yet from his label, Roc Nation.

'KIDNAP' OF BRITON IN NIGERIA PROBED BY FOREIGN OFFICE.

The Foreign Office is investigating reports that a Briton has been kidnapped in Nigeria.
The person is said to have been seized shortly after leaving the international terminal at Lagos
Airport.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of reports of a missing person and we are liaising
with the Nigerian authorities."
The British High Commission told Reuters it was working closely with others to secure their release.

GOVERNOR OKOROCHA SACKS ACTRESS NKIRU SYLVANUS.

The governor of Imo State, Rochas Ewelle Okorocha has finally sacked Nollywood actress, Nkiru Sylvanus from his cabinet. The light-skinned ‘cry cry’ actress was sacked by the
governor yesterday at the state executive council meeting held in the state capital. Nkiru wasn’t the only sacked aide of the governor as all others too were removed from office, including the state commissioners.

Nkiru served as a Special Assistant to the governor. She was first given the mandate to oversee matters concerning Imo indigenes in Lagos State before her redeployment to Owerri, which is the state capital. Her appointment raised issues as some people speculated that she got the job because she gives the governor a ‘special service’ as she is from Abia Sate and not Imo State.

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has made it a priority to help Nigeria qualify for the World
Cup.

The 31-year-old, who recently declared his availability to play for Super Eagles, said that he is looking forward to helping the team achieve
success, starting with the World Cup qualifiers.
Ameobi, whose only cap for Nigeria came in a friendly match against Venezuela in November last year, stated that he is looking forward to

THREE-STOREY BUILDING COLLAPSED ON EBUTE METTA, CLAIMING LIVES. [PHOTOS]

A three-storey building located at Olota street, off Hebert Macaulay way, Ebute Metta lagos collapsed on the wee hours on thursday morning claiming lives, while some number of people were still trapped in the building rubble, at the time of these report.

Confirming this to Channels Television, the spokesman of the National Emergency management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, explained that the incident occurred at about 2.35 am, trapping 10 people.
He also confirmed that seven people have been rescued so far, while operations are continuing to
rescue the remaining victims.
Eyewitness accounts claim occupants of the building heard some sounds in the building around
1am, prompting all of them to evacuate after noticing some cracks on the wall of the building.
They returned into the building at about 2am, only for the entire structure to collapse shortly after.

The NEMA official added that seven people have been rescued so far, while operations by the
police, men of the state fire service and volunteers are continuing to rescue the remaining victims.

GOVERNOR AMAECHI ESCAPES DEATH AS CONVOY RAMS INTO SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE [PHOTOS]

What would have been termed another tragedy in the nation’s political terrain, was yesterday
evening averted when the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi miraculously escaped
unhurt as a suspicious vehicle rammed into his convoy along Igwuruta road while he was on his
way to the Port Harcourt International Airport.

The incident, according to eyewitness was caused by a Toyota Avensis, with registration number, AAA 767 AQ, that rammed into the Governor’s convoy from the opposite side of the dual carriageway, just after the C4I Security Post, along the Port Harcourt International Airport
Road.
Report gathered that no one was harmed in the incident, but the driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested and handed over to the police.

Yesterday, a tanker conveying kerosene had an accident at Oshodi ,on the Oshodi-Apapa
expressway. In no time, residents swooped on the tanker scooping it’s content to the dismay of
motorists and security agents.
