COUNCIL BOSS CONDEMNS BURNING OF HOUSES
Port Harcourt – Mr Welendu Amadi, Chairman, Ikwerre Local Government Council in Rivers, has condemned the burning of houses by protesting students of the University of Port Harcourt.
The burning of the houses was in reprisal to the killing of four students of the university on Oct. 5 in Aluu town, near the institution by an angry mob for alleged stealing.
Angered by the murder, some students of the university took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the killing.
The protest which lasted several hours led to the blocking of the East-West road and the burning of three houses in Umuokiri Aluu.
Amadi told newsmen in Port Harcourt on Wednesday that it was wrong for the students to take the laws into their hands.
“Two wrongs cannot make a right, we urge everybody to be law abiding as anybody found perpetrating violence will be made to face the law,’’ he warned.
In a related development, the alumni association of the University of Port Harcourt condemned the killing of the four students, describing it as a “murder of the future’’.
A statement signed by Mr Sampson Ngerigbara, the association’s president in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, called on the police to ensure that justice prevailed.
“Let us see justice done at the end of it all, it will act as deterrent to others intending to carry out such acts,’’ he said. (NAN)
